The Matrix

The Matrix is the most restrained thing in the Icons line and, up close, the most intricate. Where the Skull and the Buddha are sculpted figures, the Matrix is pure pattern: a cylindrical corner whose outer face carries a fine engraved maze, cut in a continuous path that never repeats predictably enough for the eye to solve it.

That choice does something specific. A figure reads instantly and commits you to a mood — a skull is aggressive, a buddha is calm. A geometric field reads as material rather than as subject, so it changes what the phone looks like without announcing a theme. It is the Icon for someone who wants the sculpting and not the statement.

It is also the newest design, and currently the only one made exclusively for the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro Max — cast for the flat-rail geometry and the full-width camera plateau of that generation rather than adapted from an earlier body.

An engraved field behaves differently from a sculpted one. There are no deep shadows to fill, so the finish is doing almost all of the work: the pattern is visible because the engraved channels hold the anodising slightly darker than the polished lands around them.

Gold

The warmest and the most legible. The maze reads clearly at arm's length because the contrast between channel and land is highest here, and the whole piece has the look of a small engraved object rather than a phone part.

Silver

Cooler and quieter. The pattern is there when you look and disappears when you do not, which on a natural titanium or white phone is close to invisible until the light catches it.

Carbon

The most monolithic reading in the range. Matte throughout, so the maze registers as texture under the thumb more than as a picture — the Matrix at its most restrained.

It is still a corner protector. Each piece takes the corner impact, stands proud of both glass faces so the phone rests on metal rather than on its screen or its back, and holds the phone at an angle on its long edge for video.

Hand-cast in brass one piece at a time, then plated and hand-finished, and bonded with the custom-engineered 3M adhesive and primer included in every set. Four pieces per set — one with a cut-out for the camera lens — plus a second full set of adhesives so a piece can be lifted and re-seated. Made in the USA.

Because the sculpting is directional, orientation matters more here than on an Original. There is a right way up, and it is worth taking a minute over on the first application.
