The Skull

A skull is the oldest ornament there is, and it has been through enough hands — memento mori, biker patch, Mexican folk art, house jewellery, streetwear graphic — that putting one on an object is never a neutral act. The Skull leans into that rather than sanding it down. It is not a cute skull and it is not a stylised icon of a skull. It is modelled with brow ridge, orbital depth, cheekbone and jaw, and it sits at the corner of the phone facing outward.

It is the most sculpturally demanding piece Corners4 makes, and that shows up as a manufacturing constraint: the detail has to survive being cast at this scale, in brass, four times per set, with an internal geometry that still has to seat precisely on a specific phone corner. The exterior can be as expressive as it likes; the interior is a tolerance.

Worn as a set of four, the effect is closer to hardware on a jacket than to a phone accessory. That is the intent.

The Skull's deep recesses are the reason its finishes are the antiques. On a sculpt this aggressive, a uniform polish would fill the shadows with reflections and flatten the whole thing.

Antique Silver

The classic reading. Bright across the cranium and cheek, dropping to near-black in the orbits and along the jaw. This is the finish where the modelling is most legible from arm's length.

Antique Gold

Warmer and slightly softer in contrast, with recesses that go brown rather than grey. It reads less like bone and more like an object that has been handled for a long time.

Carbon

Matte throughout, so the Skull reads by silhouette and edge rather than by contrast. On a black phone it is nearly monolithic — the most restrained way to wear this design, and the one people choose when they want it noticed close up and not from across a room.

It is still a corner protector. The Skull takes the corner impact, stands proud of both glass faces so the phone rests on metal rather than on its screen or its back, and holds the phone at an angle on its long edge for video. Hand-cast in brass, plated and hand-lacquered, and set with imported European clear crystal eyes. It bonds with custom-engineered 3M adhesive and a primer that is non-destructive to the phone, and every set ships with a second full set of adhesives.

Because the sculpting is directional, orientation matters more on an Icons set than on an Original — there is a right way up, and getting it right on the first application is worth taking a minute over.
